Ascension’s service center handles business side of health care

norrell-mark_lgWho knew that Ascension Health Ministry, which employs more than 500 people at a service center in Indianapolis, was the nation’s largest nonprofit health system? The Indy Star contacted the IU News and Media office for help with a Sunday business story explaining the organization’s growth. Mark Norrell, a lecturer at the IU School of Public and Environmental Affairs, said it’s partly a matter of size leading to improved purchasing power. “Health systems grow and they centralize and they gain these economies of scale,” he said. “That provides opportunities to reduce cost.”
