USS Indiana prow to be displayed at IU’s Memorial Stadium, honoring WWII battleship


The original prow for the USS Indiana is now on display at IU’s Memorial Stadium.

The battleship served in the Pacific during World War II and was the last ship to be named for the Hoosier state. The acquisition reunited the ship’s prow with its mainmast and two of its gun mounts, which have been on display outside Memorial Stadium’s west entrance since May 1966.

The university formally welcomed the ship’s prow to its new home with a rededication ceremony Sept. 7, 2013, when IU hosted Navy in a home football game.

IU Communications created a multimedia project around the prow’s homecoming.
